2025 Tata Altroz vs rivals: price and spec comparison

We pit the new Altroz against its rivals to see which premium hatchback emerges victorious on paper.

The Tata Altroz facelift is finally on sale, bringing a sharper design, an updated interior, an expanded features list and a familiar set of powertrains. It’s one of the few premium hatchbacks available in India, with the Hyundai i20, Toyota Glanza and Maruti Suzuki Baleno being the other contenders. Let’s find out how the updated Altroz fares against its rivals in price, size and powertrain offerings.

Altroz starting price is no longer most affordable

The Altroz’s starting price was lower than that of its rivals, but Tata has hiked it by Rs 24,000 with the facelift. The i20 continues to be the priciest of the lot, retailing at Rs 7.04 lakh for its base variant.

As for the top-spec trims, the Baleno is the most affordable option at Rs 9.92 lakh for its Alpha automatic variant. The Glanza’s V AMT variant costs Rs 10 lakh, while the Altroz’s Accomplished+ S costs Rs 11.49 lakh. At Rs 12.56 lakh, the i20’s N Line N8 Turbo DCT variant is the most expensive premium hatchback here.

2025 Tata Altroz facelift engine and gearbox vs rivals

Altroz has the most diverse assortment of powertrains on offer

With petrol, diesel and CNG variants, the Altroz facelift has a clear advantage over its rivals in terms of powertrain choices. Notably, it’s the only hatchback in India that offers a diesel engine. Comparing the 1.2-litre petrol engines, the Baleno and Glanza have the highest power output at 90hp, with the Altroz following closely at 88hp, and then the i20 at 83hp. Torque figures are extremely close, with the Altroz surging ahead at 115Nm, followed by the i20 at 114.7Nm and the Baleno-Glanza duo at 113Nm.

The i20 also has a trick up its sleeve for buyers seeking a sportier driving experience, with the hatchback’s N Line variants offering exactly that, thanks to a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbo-petrol engine developing 120hp and 172Nm. Interestingly, the outgoing Altroz offered a similarly sporty Racer trim that came equipped with a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 120hp and 170Nm. However, Tata has not confirmed whether the new Altroz will get a Racer trim or even its turbo-petrol engine.

Both i20 and Altroz facelift offer dual-clutch transmissions

Coming to gearbox offerings, the Altroz facelift and i20 offer the most diverse selections. The Tata hatchback offers a 5-speed manual, 6-speed AMT (petrol only) and 6-speed DCT (top-spec variant only), while the Hyundai gets a 5-speed manual, CVT auto, 6-speed manual and 7-speed DCT, with the last two being exclusive to the N Line variants. Meanwhile, the Baleno and Glanza come with a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT.
