Hyundai has introduced the 2026 Verna with minor exterior revisions, feature additions to the interior, and a new trim nomenclature. With these updates, Hyundai has brought the Verna up to speed with its competition, including the Volkswagen Virtus, which currently leads the segment in terms of sales. In this article, we compare the top-end Verna HX10 with the Virtus’ GT Plus trim to see which sedan is the better value proposition.
2026 Hyundai Verna vs Volkswagen Virtus: Engine specifications
The Verna offers an additional engine option
In top trim guise, the Verna and Virtus only offer automatic transmissions with their respective engines. However, the Verna has an additional engine option in the form of a naturally aspirated petrol unit. The GT Plus trim of the Virtus only comes with the more powerful 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine, however the sedan also offers a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit on its lower trims.
2026 Hyundai Verna vs Volkswagen Virtus: Exterior features
Only the Virtus gets a cornering function
| Cornering function | No | Fog lamp only |
While both the Verna and Virtus come well equipped on the outside with LED light setups, 16-inch alloy wheels, and auto-folding ORVMs, the Virtus nudges ahead with fog lamps at the front and rear. A spoiler is present on both sedans, but the Verna gets a prominent rear wing, while the Virtus comes with a subtle boot-lip-mounted spoiler. In terms of colours, both sedans get monotone and matte finish options, with the Verna getting an additional dual-tone paint option. Meanwhile, the Virtus’ GT Plus is offered in ‘Sport’ and ‘Chrome’ guises with both featuring unique detailing for the exterior.
2026 Hyundai Verna vs Volkswagen Virtus: Interior features
Verna offers a lot more bells and whistles than the Virtus
In the features department, it’s the Verna that comes out on top. It gets bigger infotainment and digital display screens, more adjustments for the powered driver seat with memory, electric ‘boss mode’ for the front passenger seat, and rear sunshades. However, the Virtus does come with extra adjustability for its powered front passenger seat and 60:40 split rear seat folding, which the Verna skips on.
2026 Hyundai Verna vs Volkswagen Virtus: Driving features
Drive modes only present on the Verna
When it comes to driving features, only the Verna comes with drive modes. Moreover, it also gets adaptive cruise control, while the Virtus only gets standard cruise control.
2026 Hyundai Verna vs Volkswagen Virtus: Safety Features
Virtus misses out on ADAS tech
Both the Virtus and Verna cover the basic side of safety features by having ABS, ESC, TPMS and an auto-dimming IRVM. However, the Verna comes with an additional airbag, 360-degree camera, level 2 ADAS, and front parking sensors, all of which are missing on the Volkswagen rival. Notably, the Virtus has also received a 5-star rating by GNCAP. While the 2026 Verna has not been tested for crash safety, its pre-facelift version achieved 5-stars in GNCAP tests.
2026 Hyundai Verna vs Volkswagen Virtus: Prices and verdict
The Verna is around Rs 1.64 lakh more accessible
While the presence of a naturally aspirated engine makes the Verna more affordable, even its turbo-petrol variant is about Rs 54,000 cheaper than the Virtus’ top trim. Between the Verna and the Virtus, it’s the former that we’d recommend. Not only are the Verna’s top variants more affordable than the Virtus, but features like bigger screens, a memory function for the driver seat, drive modes, and the presence of safety tech like a 360-degree camera and level 2 ADAS on the Verna make it a more compelling buy.
