On Day 3 of WAVES 2025, Aamir Khan conducted a one-hour-plus-long masterclass on ‘The Art of Acting’. It got an incredible response and many aspiring actors learned how to be a better actor, that too from the perfectionist himself. Aamir also made it interesting by sharing anecdotes from his memorable films. One of the memorable moments was when he spoke about his much-loved film, Dil (1990).
Aamir Khan admits he HATED Dil marriage-with-no-witness scene, until Gaiety-Galaxy went WILD: “Indra Kumar told me, ‘Audience logic nahin sochne waali’; mujhe poora yakeen tha ki log uss scene pe thukenge humpe…”
Aamir said, “In Dil, my father’s name in the film is Hazari Prasad, played by Anupam Kher. In the climax, my character learns that his father did bad stuff for money. My character has to scold his father, saying, ‘Yeh kaunsi bhookh hai Hazari Prasad?’. My upbringing is such that I have never angrily addressed my father angrily as ‘Tahir Hussain’ (laughs). We were never taught to speak to our parents in such a manner. Aapka tone ek level ke oopar nahin ja sakta. Even if I am angry with my father, I’ll stay silent. But in the film, I have to scold and even challenge him.”
Aamir Khan continued, “I told Indu (Indra Kumar) about it. I asked, ‘I’ll call him Papa or Daddy. Why would I address him as Hazari Prasad?’. This was difficult for me to understand but it was the requirement of mainstream cinema. Somehow, I did the shoot. Maine bahut bura kiya hai scene (smiles).”
He added, “When I was new, my sensibility was different. And the sensibility of mainstream cinema was such that I was not ready for it. I was too raw and I didn’t know how to navigate. I learned a lot from that process. As an actor, when you feel discomforted and you have no choice but to go for it, it can disturb you. However, that process of doing something which you don’t believe in teaches you a lot actually.”
Aamir Khan also said, “There was another scene in Dil where I arrive at Madhuri Dixit’s place, enter her room and lock it from inside, Saeed Jaffrey, who is Madhuri’s father, is standing outside while I break a chair, set it on fire aur Madhuri aur main agni ke saat chakkar lete hai. This is how I get married while the father stands outside helpless.”
Aamir raised laughs as he exulted, “I have a very logical mind. I asked Indu, ‘Agreed that he took seven pheras. But there are no witnesses to it. And why is Saeed Jaffrey panicking? He knows that ultimately darwaza toh kholne hi waale hai. He can always say that he wouldn’t accept the marriage’. Indu took 3-4 hours to convince me. He told me, ‘Audience logic nahin sochne waali’. I was like, ‘Why wouldn’t they? They are quite smart’!”
Aamir confessed, “Nevertheless, I shot for it. Then, I went to witness the audience reaction in Gaiety-Galaxy after the film was released. I was shocked to see people going crazy and whistling on that scene! Mujhe poora yakeen tha ki log uss scene pe thukenge humpe. They’d say, ‘Tum log kuch bhi illogical cheez dikha rahe ho’. That day, I learned that technical and legal logic is on one side and emotional logic on the other; the latter goes above everyone else. If you are able to take the audience on an emotional journey, then they react emotionally to your scenes.”
