In the fifth episode of The Filmy Hustle, hosted by distributor-exhibitor Akshaye Rathi, Kabir Khan opened up on his journey and what went behind the making of his memorable films. Kabir was honest enough to admit that Tubelight (2017), his third outing with Salman Khan, failed to entice the audience, leading to its debacle.
Kabir Khan admits that there’s TREMENDOUS pressure to make Bajrangi Bhaijaan 2; opens up on Tubelight debacle: “Because it stars Salman Khan, a film that does Rs. 130-140 crores is seen as a disaster”
Kabir began by saying, “Tubelight is a film which made no attempt at fan service either from me or Salman. If you see that performance, Salman totally surrendered to the character. He never went out of note. Sometimes, we push the envelope so much that we push it out of the park.”
He added, “Tubelight is a character-driven film, not a plot-driven film. It’s a loosely-put plot though it has an interesting story. The politics of the film were very strong. Through the Chinese family, we were questioning the insider vs outsider debate. I really enjoyed making it. But because it stars Salman Khan, a film that collects Rs. 130-140 crores is seen as a disaster. We had also set up a huge bar after Ek Tha Tiger (2012) and Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015); we completely fell flat on our face.”
Kabir Khan also confessed that many assumed that Kabir should make Ek Tha Tiger’s sequel after the success of the first part, “For the longest time, Salman couldn’t understand. He was like, ‘Iska dimaag kharab hai kya? Ek Tha Tiger part 2 kyun nahin bana raha hai?’! The conventional wisdom in our industry is that successful film ka part 2 banao na; kyun time waste kar rahe ho. Many even asked for New York 2. I asked, ‘Have you seen the film? Everyone has been shot. How do I make a sequel? I’ll have to wait for the kid to grow up’! I feel a sequel is a producer’s game, not a director’s game. I feel that I have narrated the story already; why should I now make its second part? Of course, there is pressure. ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan ka part 2 kyun nahin aa raha hai’ – all that pressure keeps coming.”
