Shraddha Kapoor was a vision in a black and golden ensemble at the Joy Awards in Riyadh recently. In the pictures and videos online, the Stree 2 actor looks regal in a modest custom corset gown by Torani, which is reportedly inspired by the traditional Abaya worn by Muslim women, especially in Middle Eastern countries.
The black ensemble — a perfect blend of glam and tradition — featured a sheer neckline and sleeves adorned with intricate golden sequins embroidered. The corset bodice stole the show, with golden sequin and zari work adding a hint of regal elegance to her outfit.
Styled by celebrity fashion stylist Namrata Deepak, Shraddha Kapoor completed her look with minimal accessories, donning a pair of simple golden drop earrings and golden high heels. A pulled-back bun, soft, dewy makeup, a hint of blush, and a delicate winged eyeliner completed her look for the night.
Describing the look, Sugandha Suneja, Assistant Professor, Department of Fashion Management Studies, NIFT Panchkula, explained that an abaya is a long, loose-fitting cloak, considered a symbol of modesty and cultural identity for centuries in the Arabian Peninsula and the broader Muslim world. “Its origins can be traced to the pre-Islamic era when modest clothing was typical among women in the region, influenced by societal norms emphasizing privacy and discretion,” she said.
While the modern form of the abaya evolved from the “ra’s abaya,” an open square cloak draped over the head and body, the traditional garment was crafted from simple materials like cotton or wool and occasionally adorned with gold-thread embroidery for special occasions, she added.
Marker of social status and identity
“At its core, the abaya aligns with Islamic principles of modesty as outlined in the Qur’an. The garment is a physical representation of ‘haya’ (modesty), a concept that encompasses behavior, speech, and dress. In conservative societies, it also functions as a boundary marker between private and public life, ensuring women can navigate public spaces while adhering to cultural and religious norms,” said Suneja.
While the abaya was traditionally a simple and functional cloak, it also indicated a woman’s social status. Wealthier families often opted for finely crafted abayas made of luxurious materials like silk, adorned with embroidery or gold-thread embellishments. Suneja also mentioned how the abaya finds its purpose in ceremonial events—serving as a bridal garment, draped over the bride to signify purity and modesty, or during religious occasions like Ramadan or Hajj, where its role lies in connecting the wearer with broader religious practices.
