A day after a 13-year-old student tragically died from electrocution at his school in Kollam district, Kerala, General Education Minister V Sivankutty announced immediate measures on Friday. These include suspending the headmistress and issuing a show-cause notice to the school’s management, reported PTI.
Midhun, a student at Thevalakkara Boys High School, was fatally electrocuted by a live wire on the school premises.
Speaking to reporters, the minister said the government had received a detailed report from the Director General of Education and was taking swift action.
“We have lost a son of Kerala,” Sivankutty stated.
Actions taken include reorganising the school’s Parent-Teacher Association, requiring an explanation from the Assistant Educational Officer about the failure, and giving the management three days to respond to the notice, the report added.
Support for Midhun’s family includes Rs 3 lakh in emergency aid, constructing a new house through the Scouts and Guides, and free education up to Class 12 for his younger sibling.
Sivankutty mentioned that a government circular issued in May had already warned schools to identify and report electrical hazards before reopening.
“The circular was clear. There can be no excuse,” he added.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:15 AM on Thursday when Midhun, while playing with his classmates, lost his shoe, which ended up on top of a shed. A video of the event shows Midhun trying to retrieve the shoe by climbing onto the shed. He becomes entangled in the live electric line passing through the shed and collapses instantly.
Following the incident, the Human Rights Commission registered a suo motu case regarding the student’s death. Taking the tragedy seriously, the commission directed the Director of Public Education and the District Police Chief (Kollam Rural) to launch an immediate investigation and submit a report within 14 days.
