Over 12,000 teaching positions are currently vacant in Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas across India, as reported by the Ministry of Education. Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary shared this information in a written response in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, reported PTI.
“As of now, there are 7,765 vacant teaching positions in Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and 4,323 in Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti nationwide,” he stated.
“Vacancies in teacher posts in Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti arise due to various reasons such as opening of new Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas, retirement, resignation, promotion, transfer, employees proceeding on lien to other departments and upgradation of schools,” Chaudhary said.
The minister highlighted that the process of filling these vacancies is ongoing and steps are being taken in line with relevant recruitment rules.
“There is a provision to hire contractual teachers for a temporary duration, to ensure uninterrupted academic functioning. There are 143 vacancies in Group A academic posts in the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). The process of filling up these vacancies is under way,” Chaudhary said.
He also noted that there are 60 vacancies in the National Council for Teacher Education as of now, the report added.

The Education Ministry has also informed the Rajya Sabha that over 4.7 lakh pirated NCERT textbooks have been confiscated nationwide since 202. Chaudhary informed the Rajya Sabha that incidents of piracy involving NCERT textbooks have been reported from various regions across the country, according to a PTI.
“Instances of piracy of NCERT textbooks have been received from different parts of the country. During the years 2024 and 2025, approximately 4.71 lakh pirated copies of NCERT textbooks have been seized in various operations across different states. Piracy is driven primarily by commercial motives of unscrupulous elements,” Chaudhary had said.
