In a historic first, India’s top women’s chess player Koneru Humpy will take on compatriot and 19 years her junior, Divya Deshmukh, in the finals of the FIDE Women’s World Cup, as both women fight for the ultimate glory on one of the biggest stages for women’s chess.

Humpy held her nerves to score a come-from-behind win against China’s Tingjie Lei in the tiebreaker to set up an all-Indian summit clash against Divya at the FIDE Women’s World Cup in Batumi.

Humpy will clash with Divya in the final beginning after a day’s rest, starting on Saturday, July 26. With the former winning, both she and Divya have now qualified for the Women’s candidates’ tournament in 2026.

After two draws in Batumi, Humpy had to work hard in the next set of tiebreak matches that had 10 minutes for both players with another increment. Lei got in the lead early in the set of these two matches and Humpy erred in the middle match to lose a pawn and get in to a difficult endgame.

The final will include two classical matches, one each on Saturday and Sunday, July 27. If required, tiebreaks will be played on Monday.

Each player will have 90 minutes for the first 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the classical match. A 30-second increment per move will be added from the first move.

In the tiebreaks, two rapid matches of 10 minutes will be played with a 10-second increment after every move.

If the final is still tied, two five-minute matches will be played with three-second increments after every move.

If the final is still tied, two Blitz matches of three minutes each will be played, with two-second increments after every move.

If required, 3+2 blitz matches will continue until there is a winner. The winner of the Women’s World Cup will earn $50,000 in prize money, while the runner-up will get $35,000.
