Sanjeev Kumar, alias Sanjeev Mukhiya, a key accused in the NEET 2024 question paper leak case, has been granted bail. The CBI special court, located within the civil court premises, has ordered his release from judicial custody. This decision was made according to Section 167 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), which stipulates that a charge sheet must be filed within 90 days of arrest.
Regarding the NEET-2024 exam question paper leak, conducted by the National Testing Agency, the special CBI court at Patna Civil Court has granted bail to Mukhiya. He had submitted an application to Judge Sunil Kumar Singh, stating that he had been in judicial custody for 90 days, but the CBI had not yet filed a charge sheet against him. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court applied Section 167 of the CrPC and ordered Mukhiya’s release on bail.
Mukhiya was also linked to the 2016 constable recruitment paper leak and had served jail time in the BPSC teacher recruitment scam. He previously worked as a technical assistant at Nursarai Horticulture College. His son, Dr Shivkumar, an MBBS graduate from PMCH, is currently in jail.
It is noteworthy that the NEET exam was held nationwide on May 5, 2024. Amar Kumar, the in-charge of Shastrinagar police station in Patna, arrested several individuals for tampering. The case was later transferred to the Economic Offenses Unit. When the question paper leak came to light, the central government handed the investigation over to the CBI, which registered its FIR on June 23, 2024. Since then, the investigation has been ongoing.
To date, 49 individuals have been arrested in connection with the NEET question paper leak case. The CBI filed the initial charge sheet against 13 accused on July 1, 2024. Subsequently, the first charge sheet against 6 individuals was filed on September 19, 2024. The second supplementary charge sheet was filed on October 7, 2024 against 21 accused in jail, followed by a third supplementary charge sheet against one individual on November 7, 2024. The fourth supplementary charge sheet was filed against four individuals on November 22, 2024. So far, charge sheets have been filed against 45 people in the case.
