The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has declared that Class 10 and 12 students must achieve at least 75 per cent attendance to qualify for the board examinations in 2026. A 25 per cent relaxation is available for students dealing with medical emergencies, participating in national or international sports events, or other serious reasons.
According to the official notice, students must submit supporting documents or records in such instances. Any student taking leave for medical or other reasons must apply to the school with proper documentation at the time of leave. Leave without a written request will be treated as unauthorised absence.
In medical emergencies, students must submit a leave application along with valid medical documentation immediately after taking leave. For other reasons, students must inform the school of their absence with a valid reason in writing. CBSE may classify students as non-attending or dummy candidates if they are absent without proper leave records.
Schools are required to regularly monitor and maintain accurate attendance records, the board stated. Attendance registers must be updated daily and signed by the class teacher and the school’s competent authority.
If any student frequently misses school or fails to meet the attendance requirement, the schools have been directed to notify the parents in writing.
The board also emphasised that regular attendance is essential for meeting the board’s examination requirements and fostering responsible and well-rounded individuals. “Regular attendance is not only essential for meeting the Board’s examination requirements but also for fostering responsible and well-rounded individuals. Therefore, it is once again directed to all schools to disseminate the above information to their students timely,” reads the official notice.
CBSE may conduct surprise inspections to verify student attendance records. If the records are found incomplete during such inspections, the school may face strict action, including disaffiliation.
Recently, the board found many dummy students at several schools during a surprise inspections in 15 schools across Delhi, Chandigarh, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. “Further, necessary action shall be taken after considering the reports of the Inspection Committee. CBSE is committed to upholding educational standards and will persist in enforcing stringent measures against any violations of its regulations,” it had said.
