Star Barcelona winger is all set to play in Miami as La Liga are plotting a move to bring Barcelona to the United States, according to a report in The Athletic. The game is planned for December and would be the first-ever league game to be played outside Spain.
As per the report, Villareal will have their home game against Barcelona at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, instead of Estadio de la Ceramica in Spain.
La Liga president Javier Tebas spoke to reporters earlier this year and admitted that the plan was in discussion.
“I think it could be in the 2025-26 season, but La Liga will play official matches abroad. An official match in the US will strengthen our position in the North American market, which is the second market for La Liga after Spain,” Tebas said while speaking to The Expansion.
“Other very competitive leagues are coming, so we cannot always do the same thing, but we can’t allow them to overtake us,” Tebas added.
Barcelona have been open to the idea of playing one of their games abroad and the club president, Joan Laporta, has been public about it.
“For a La Liga [match], I think that will be very interesting. I know that the president of La Liga (Javier Tebas) is keen on celebrating this official game in the States. We are a club that belongs to La Liga and we are responsible because we want to commercialise La Liga as best as possible,” Laporta told CNN.
The tournament’s plans might face a problem as the Villareal vs Barcelona clash is scheduled for the weekend of Saturday, December 20 and Sunday, December 21. The Miami Dolphins have an NFL match on Sunday at the Hard Rock Stadium as well.
Meanwhile, double strikes from Fermín Lopez and Yamal and a first-half goal from Brazilian Raphinha completed the rout in the Joan Gamper Trophy as Barcelona beat Como 5-0 on Monday.
