At a time when Tamil Nadu and other southern states are up in arms against the New Education Policy (NEP), a parliamentary standing committee report submitted on Monday said it was critical to have complete confidence of the states to successfully advance the vision of the NEP.
The committee is headed by Congress MP Digvijaya Singh, and it submitted a report on ‘Implementation of the NEP-2020 in Higher Education’ on Monday.
“A synergized collaboration between stakeholders is required for the successful implementation of the NEP. Education is in the concurrent list of the Constitution. It is therefore critical to have the complete confidence of the States to successfully advance the vision of the NEP,” the report said.
It added that the Centre in its answers to the committee has not touched on the modalities as to how the Union Government is working with State Governments that have expressed reservations about various elements of the NEP in Higher Education.
“Hence, the Committee is of the opinion that the Ministry must develop a mechanism to coordinate with the States on any such concerns that they may have shared,” the report said.
Tamil Nadu last week became the first state to have its own education policy, rejecting the Centre’s NEP as it has termed the same as an effort towards ‘Hindi imposition’. Tamil Nadu has also rejected the three-language formula under the NEP and said it will only teach Tamil and English in schools. The Karnataka government has also rejected the NEP in a similar fashion.
The Centre stopped the release of funds to Tamil Nadu for not implementing the NEP 2020, but the Tamil Nadu government said it won’t accept the funds as for it the two-language formula was the most important.
