Rio Ngumoha entered his name in the history books on Monday (August 25) by becoming the youngest goal scorer for Liverpool Football Club. The English footballer was 16 years and 361 days old on Monday when he came off the bench to score a goal for Liverpool at St James’ Park against Newcastle United.

The goal in the 90+10th minute of the match also helped the youngster break Wayne Rooney’s all-time Premier League record of being the youngest footballer to score a winning goal.

Rooney was 16 years and 362 days old when, on October 19, 2002, he scored the winner for Everton in the 89th minute of the match against Arsenal.

Ngumoha, who wears jersey number 73 for Liverpool, replaced Cody Gapko in the 90+6th minute of the match, and four minutes later he scored his first-ever Premier League goal for the Merseyside-based club to seal a dramatic win.

For Liverpool, Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch scored the first goal in the 35th minute of the match against the run of play, and in the first minute after the break, Hugo Ekitike doubled the advantage. Both the goals were assisted by Cody Gakpo, who also scored one goal in the last match played against Bournemouth at Anfield.

Despite leading the match by 2-0 against a 10-man Newcastle side till the 56th minute, Liverpool were in danger of dropping points after Bruno Guimaraes (57th) and William Osula (88th) scored for the hosts, but Ngumoha sealed the deal.

“This is also what makes the Premier League special,” said Liverpool manager Arne Slot.

“Maybe it wasn’t the best game in terms of tactics or in terms of playing football, but I think every fan everywhere around the world enjoyed watching this game of football.”

Victory takes Liverpool level on maximum points from two games with Tottenham and title rivals Arsenal, who travel to Anfield on Sunday.

Newcastle remain without a win as they miss their wantaway talisman Alexander Isak.
