Red Bull driver Max Verstappen clinched the Italian Grand Prix crown on Sunday, as the four-time reigning world champion produced a remarkable showing to hold off McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
The Dutchman, who started the race from pole after having set the fastest lap in F1 history when taking top spot on the grid on Saturday, slowed down the McLaren racers’ charge and dominance of the campaign with the win in Monza.
The Dutchman has slim chances of securing a fifth consecutive drivers’ title, trailing Piastri by 94 points as the Australian finished third.
Piastri leads the drivers’ standings by 31 points ahead of Norris, who finished second. The top five positions remained unchanged from the starting grid in a swift race.
Sunday’s win marked just Verstappen’s third victory in a season dominated by a McLaren car, which has won all but four GPs, outshining the competition.
A second win in Italy this year, following his triumph in the last Emilia Romagna GP in May, capped a historic weekend for the straightforward 27-year-old.
Charles Leclerc couldn’t secure a podium spot for the numerous Ferrari fans in the stands, finishing fourth.
Leclerc’s teammate, Lewis Hamilton, gave his best effort after a five-place grid penalty pushed him back to 10th at the start. He charged up to sixth thanks to some spectacular driving early in the race.
However, the seven-time F1 champion couldn’t surpass his former Mercedes teammate George Russell and was left with another underwhelming result in his first Monza GP with Ferrari.
