World champion D Gukesh and World Cup winner Divya Deshmukh played out a draw in an exciting clash between two 19-year-old Indian Grandmasters in the eighth round of the FIDE Grand Swiss in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on Friday.
It marked the first time the two faced off against each other on in the Classical format of Chess.
How Have D Gukesh And Divya Deshmukh Performed In FIDE Grand Swiss?
Gukesh started the FIDE Grand Swiss on a strong note, securing two wins and two draws in his opening games. However, his momentum has stalled, as he heads into Round 8 following three consecutive defeats against Abhimanyu Mishra of the United States, Nikolas Theodorou from Greece, and Ediz Gurel of Turkiye. He currently has three points on the leaderboard.
In contrast, Divya Deshmukh has been steadily climbing the ranks. Despite two losses, she has earned three draws and scored impressive victories over higher-rated opponents Bassem Amin of Egypt and Velimir Ivic from Serbia. With 3.5 points, she was placed ahead of Gukesh in the standings before their match.
The top two from each section will make it to the Candidates tournament of 2026 that will determine the challenger for the next World Championship match in both men and women section.
