Remember those math problems where you’re buying 30 watermelons or three-four boxes full of bananas? For many of us, it felt like math was more about funny stories than numbers. And if you grew up solving them, you’ve definitely faced Dr R.D. Sharma’s questions.
Now, Sharma isn’t just a classroom legend. Recently, he became a viral sensation online. No, not because of a tricky equation but for Flipkart advertisement.
The Math Legend You Didn’t Expect To See In An Ad
Ahead of its Big Billion Days sale, Flipkart launched an ad campaign featuring one of India’s most recognised academic figures. Instead of a movie star, sportsperson or influencer, they brought in the man who made generations both fear and love math.
The video playfully pokes fun at the kind of math jokes students grew up making. It opens with a classroom scene during an exam. One student says, “Thirty watermelons, 60 per cent off?” and another continues with, “Thirty more for 20 per cent off? What’s the final price?”
The first student immediately exclaims, “Aree aise question banata hai kaun? (Who makes questions like this?)”
The camera then shifts to Sharma, who smiles and says cheekily, “Naam toh suna hoga (You must have heard my name).” He goes on, taking a humourous jab at the scenario, saying, “Log puchte hai, itne tarbooz kaun kharidta hai. Pi bhi irrational hai aur mai bhi (People ask, who buys so many watermelons? Pi is irrational, and so am I).”
“The Math is Mathing | Dr. R.D. Sharma | Flipkart Big Billion Days. Phones keep getting faster. Shoes keep getting fancier. Life around us is changing every day. But somehow, math questions have stayed exactly the same,” the company wrote in the caption on Instagram.
“So this Big Billion Days, we asked the man who taught us all math— Dr. R.D. Sharma — to change that.He’s inviting you to write math problems for today’s world. The funnier, quirkier, and more real, the better! Share yours in the comments, and the best ones will turn into offers on Flipkart Big Billion Days,” it added.

Dr R.D. Sharma’s Ad Broke The Internet
Seeing Sharma in a Flipkart ad was definitely not something many expected and this why, viewers had a field in comment section.
One user commented, “Never knew RD Sharma could be this cool.”
Another added, “Dr R.D. Sharma has unmatched rizz, hence proved.”
Someone else couldn’t stop praising the idea behind the ad, writing, “Whoever thought of this needs to be given a raise!”
“RD Sharma ki book kholte hi lagta hai jaise logic ka firewall active ho gaya (As soon as you open an RD Sharma book, it feels like a logic firewall has been activated),” a person jokingly said.
“Whoever added that “pi lagu” in the script is a legend!” a viewer pointed out.
There were quirky, funny math-style questions too.
An individual asked, “If a smartwatch battery drains 5% every hour, how many hours until it’s completely dead starting from 100%?”
“If I sent 4 “I miss you” texts and got 0 replies, should I just add 4 items to cart instead?” read another comment.
