India’s young women wrestlers faced challenges at the major stage, with three being eliminated on Tuesday. However, Priya Malik (76kg) remains in medal contention via the repechage route.
Ankush (50kg) lost her qualification bout 5-6 to Natallia Varakina, while Tapsya was defeated 2-4 by Mexico’s Bertha Rojas Chavez. Unfortunately, both Varakina and Chavez were defeated in their next bouts, closing the door for the two Indian wrestlers.
Vaishnavi, the daughter of a dhaba owner, started strong by defeating Latvian wrestler Elma Zeidlere 3-1 but was then defeated by fall to Mongolia’s world No. 5 Enkhjin Tuvshinjargal in the quarterfinals.
Competing in the heaviest 76kg weight class, Priya lost her 1/8 round 2-4 to Ecuador’s world No. 5 Genesis Reasco Valdez. Valdez later secured victory over Cuban rival Milaimy De La Caridad Marin Potrille, granting Priya a repechage round where she will face Italy’s Enrica Rinladi.
What About the Male Wrestlers?
In men’s freestyle, Sujeet Kalkal (65kg) and Vicky (97kg) failed to capitalise on their repechage opportunities. Sujeet exited after losing 5-7 to American wrestler Real Marshall Ray Woods in a fast-paced bout, while Vicky was eliminated by fall to Bulgaria’s Akhmed Magamaev.
Antim Panghal, another of India’s top medal hopes, will commence her campaign on Wednesday in the women’s 53kg category competition.
