Mohammed Kudus scored his first goal for Tottenham, lifting the team to second place in the Premier League by ending Leeds’ long unbeaten home run with a 2-1 victory on Saturday.
Noah Okafor equalised Mathys Tel’s opener for the visitors during an intense first half.
Kudus secured the winner just before the hour mark, and Tottenham displayed their new defensive strength under Thomas Frank to hand Leeds their first league defeat at Elland Road in 24 matches.
Spurs are now just one point behind leaders Liverpool, but Arsenal could move to the top later on Saturday if they win against West Ham.
Tottenham had to stage late comebacks to avoid defeat against Wolves and Champions League debutants Bodo/Glimt over the past week.
How Spurs Beat Leeds?
Frank made six changes to the team that played in the Arctic Circle on Tuesday, resulting in a more focused performance from the visitors.
Leeds missed opportunities to avoid their first league defeat at Elland Road since losing to Burnley in September 2024.
Joe Rodon should have put Leeds ahead when he headed Sean Longstaff’s free-kick off the post in the seventh minute.
Tel, left out of Spurs’ Champions League squad after struggling since his permanent move from Bayern Munich, was given a rare start and made the most of it with his first goal of the season. Kudus set him up, and his powerful shot deflected off Pascal Struijk, leaving Karl Darlow helpless.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed a great chance to equalise before Kudus did the same at the other end after a swift Spurs counter-attack.
Despite this, Daniel Farke’s team deserved to be level at the break. Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario could only parry Brenden Aaronson’s shot, allowing Okafor to tap in for his second Leeds goal.
Tel nearly scored his second with a header that hit the crossbar in first-half stoppage time.
The second half continued in an end-to-end fashion, with Vicario denying Calvert-Lewin with his feet.
Kudus then secured the winning goal with a powerful shot that deflected off Gabriel Gudmundsson, deceiving Darlow.
Last season, Tottenham dropped more points from winning positions than any other Premier League side, finishing just above the relegation zone in 17th place. Under Frank, Spurs have yet to drop points after taking the lead in a match.
Tottenham survived a late scare when Vicario made a fine save from Joel Piroe deep into stoppage time.
The defeat leaves Leeds in 12th place with eight points from their first seven games.
