Aston Villa secured a 2-1 victory against Young Boys at Villa Park in their UEFA Europa League match on Friday, with Donyell Malen scoring twice in a game that saw disruptions from Swiss away fans. Malen opened the scoring for the Villans in the first half, before Joel Monteiro netted a consolation goal for the Swiss team.
However, Dutchman Malen was struck by a projectile thrown at him by the travelling Young Boys fans, leaving him with a cut on his head.
Villa manager Unai Emery praised Malen’s contributions, noting, “He’s very motivated and he’s playing like he’s training. Everything he’s achieving now, we can see it before in the training sessions.” Emery emphasized Malen’s goal-scoring prowess and his ability to assist, highlighting his speed as a key asset.
Villa capitalized on their early pressure in the 27th minute when Youri Tielemans delivered a cross into the box. Malen rose between two defenders to head the ball powerfully, with the keeper only able to deflect it onto the post before it went in.
Young Boys maintained a defensive stance, allowing Villa to dominate. Three minutes before the break, Morgan Rogers sent Malen through on goal, where he evaded a defender and calmly placed his shot into the far corner.
Following the goal, play was briefly halted as police managed disturbances in the away section. Young Boys captain Loris Benito appealed for calm as fans threw objects onto the pitch, a recurring issue during the match.
After the break, Malen found the net again, but his hat-trick was denied due to Rogers being offside in the build-up. The visitors nearly scored with their first chance, but Chris Bedia’s goal was disallowed.
Young Boys managed to score in the 90th minute through Joel Monteiro, who controlled a floated ball into the box before firing it home. Despite this, the Swiss side could not stage a remarkable comeback, having shown little throughout the match at Villa Park.
