The Commissionerate Police has launched a detailed investigation into the death of KIIT University student Rahul Yadav, who was found hanging in his hostel room on Sunday night. Rahul, 18, was a first-year Computer Science student from Raipur, Chhattisgarh, and had been staying at KP 7 AB, Campus 10.

According to the Police, information regarding the incident reached Infocity Police Station around 10.45 pm on November 30. Officers immediately reached the spot, and the room, which was locked from the inside, was opened in the presence of police officials under videography.

Rahul was rushed to KIMS Hospital, where the attending doctor declared him dead. Based on the medical report, a UD (Unnatural Death) case was registered on December 1.

Police personnel collected forensic evidence from his room, and the Scientific Officer seized Rahul’s phone and laptop for investigation. The room was sealed until the arrival of his parents.

Senior police officials, including the Commissioner of Police, inspected the premises and spoke to Rahul’s hostel mates to gather background information and understand the circumstances leading to his death. The police said that statements from students, digital communication and social media interactions are being examined as part of the investigation.

Rahul’s family members, who reside in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh, were informed soon after the incident and reached Bhubaneswar on Monday afternoon. The inquest was conducted, and the post-mortem examination took place at AIIMS Bhubaneswar in the presence of a magistrate. The police said the autopsy report is currently awaited.

‘Extremely Sad And Unfortunate’: KIIT’s Response To The Incident

KIIT University issued a statement expressing shock over the student’s death, describing it as “extremely sad and unfortunate.” The institution said it promptly informed the police and cooperated fully with the necessary procedures. KIIT extended “heartfelt condolences” to Rahul’s parents and family.

The university added that there is a disturbing increase in student suicides across campuses in Odisha and other states, calling it “a deeply worrying trend.” A KIIT official said that the issue “requires serious thought at the national level as it has become a major challenge of the present time.”

The university stated that preliminary information suggests “personal relationship matters were involved,” based on the statement given by Rahul’s mother to the police. She reportedly claimed her son had been emotionally pressured and threatened by another family, which allegedly led to his mental distress.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have urged restraint in speculation until all evidence is examined.
