Jadavpur University has decided not to admit engineering diploma students directly into the second year of BTech courses this academic session due to a delay in conducting the Joint Entrance Lateral Entry Test (JELET) by the WBJEE Board, a senior official said on Tuesday.
JELET is held for admission to the second year (third semester) of the four-year bachelor’s programme in engineering, technology, and pharmacy courses.
At JU, students who have passed BSc and obtained a diploma in engineering are admitted to these courses if they qualify for JELET. However, JELET was not conducted in the scheduled month of October, and there has been no update from the Higher Education Department regarding it.
“As JELET has been significantly delayed this year and classes for the four-year BTech course have already commenced following admissions to the first year, we cannot admit diploma students qualifying JELET this time,” the JU official said.
“We cannot delay the second-year BTech exams for students who were admitted to the first year through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) scheduled next week,” the official added.
He noted that the start of first-year classes had already been delayed due to issues related to the OBC quota, and postponing second-year admissions indefinitely would jeopardise the entire academic calendar.
The WBJEE results were published in August, three months after the examination date, due to an impasse over OBC reservation.
