The answer is something that fills many Indians with pride. Recent surveys and data show that India is the global leader in the total number of schools and colleges, placing it firmly among the world’s top education powerhouses.

With the world’s largest youth population, 46.9% of Indians are under the age of 25, the need for a strong and expansive education ecosystem is enormous. To meet this demand, India has developed a network that is unmatched in scale.

Reports indicate that India has around 15 lakh schools offering education from primary to higher secondary levels. In higher education too, the country stands strong, with over 12,700 colleges and universities, including premier institutions such as the IITs, IIMs and IISc.

India also dominates in secondary education. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, India has 1,39,539 secondary schools for students from Classes 9 to 12, the highest number globally.

When it comes to the total number of educational institutions, the United States and China follow India but remain far behind.

The US ranks second with nearly 5,819 higher-education institutions, including globally renowned universities such as Harvard, MIT and Stanford. China stands third, with data from its Ministry of Education showing 3,117 higher-education institutions, among them prestigious names like Tsinghua University and Peking University.
