Around the world, various cities and districts are celebrated for their distinctive identities, such as unique food, culture, or natural beauty. In India, Maharajganj district in Uttar Pradesh is affectionately known as the “City of Honey,” where honey production is a crucial part of everyday life and income. Beekeeping, honey extraction, and market transportation are vital sources of livelihood in every village.
Maharajganj is renowned for its extensive beekeeping practices and ideal environment for bees, characterised by fields, flowering crops, and greenery. Local farmers place bee boxes near their fields, earning a substantial income by selling honey, wax, and other products. This practice has led to Maharajganj being nicknamed the “City of Honey.”
Located in northeastern Uttar Pradesh near the Nepal border, Maharajganj is part of the Gorakhpur division. The region’s sprawling fields, sugarcane and mustard crops, fruit trees, and lush villages create an excellent habitat for bees.
The widespread beekeeping, fertile land, seasonal flowers, and favourable climate contribute to Maharajganj’s reputation. The honey produced here is known for its natural taste and purity, providing additional income to thousands of families alongside farming.
In Maharajganj, both traditional and modern methods are used for honey production. Farmers place beehives near fields, orchards, and forests, where bees collect nectar from mustard, litchi, sunflower, wildflowers, and seasonal plants. The multi-flower honey produced here is in high demand and sent to processing units.
The honey industry is vital to Maharajganj’s rural economy, boosting farmers’ incomes, providing employment to small businesses and self-help groups, and creating job opportunities in honey collection, packaging, and marketing. Additionally, bees improve crop pollination, enhancing the production of fruits, vegetables, and seeds.
Uttar Pradesh is a leading honey-producing state in India, with districts like Maharajganj and Saharanpur playing significant roles. Honey production is steadily increasing due to the state’s favourable climate, crop diversity, and government initiatives.
India is becoming a major honey exporter, with significant demand for its honey in Europe, the Gulf countries, and Southeast Asia. States like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Maharashtra contribute significantly to these exports, with Maharajganj playing a key role.
Meanwhile, China is the largest honey producer globally, practising organised beekeeping on a large scale and exporting honey to many countries.
