Bruno Fernandes has finally spoken after Manchester United pulled the plug on Ruben Amorim, with the club captain offering a brief but telling message to his former manager.

Amorim was dismissed with United sitting sixth in the Premier League, three points adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool, amid growing tension behind the scenes and an increasingly strained relationship with the club’s hierarchy during the January transfer window.

Fernandes was among the first players to publicly react, posting a short message on Instagram.

“Thank you, Mister! I wish the best for you and your technical staff,” Fernandes wrote.

Amorim departs Old Trafford with numbers that tell a difficult story. Across his spell at United, he averaged 1.43 points per game, the lowest return of his managerial career so far. In the Premier League this season, his side won eight, drew seven and lost five matches — a measly return of 1.55 points per game.

But Fernandes, on the other hand, thrived under the Portuguese.

While United’s sixth-place position might suggest stability, the reality is far murkier. Just four points separate fifth from 14th, leaving the table tightly packed and misleading, with momentum capable of swinging dramatically in a matter of weeks.

Fernandes and the Boardroom Divide

Fernandes’ support for Amorim is notable given his own uneasy relationship with United’s hierarchy.

Only last month, the 31-year-old midfielder revealed his belief that the club were prepared to sell him during the summer, after receiving a lucrative offer from Saudi side Al-Hilal.

Fernandes ultimately rejected the move — reportedly worth £700,000 per week — despite United standing to earn around £100 million from the deal.

While Fernandes has said Amorim wanted him to stay, he felt the same conviction was not shared by those upstairs.

“There comes a point where, for them, money is more important than anything,” Fernandes said. “The club wanted me to go, I have that in my head. I told the directors this, but I think they didn’t have the courage to make that decision.”

“I decided to stay, also because of family reasons, but because I genuinely like the club. The conversation with the manager also made me stay. But, from the club’s side, I felt a bit like, ‘If you leave, it’s not so bad for us’. It hurts me a lot,” he added.
