School holidays have been extended in Delhi due to severe cold and dense fog. The Delhi Directorate of Education (DoE) has announced that winter vacations for students from nursery to grade 8 will continue until January 15, 2026, to protect children from health issues and travel difficulties caused by the cold wave and low visibility.
This order does not apply to all classes. Students in grades 9 to 12 will continue their studies offline, but specific guidelines have been issued for their safety. Prestigious Delhi schools have informed parents that regular classes will resume on January 16th. The examination schedule for primary grades has also been altered.
Delhi School Winter Vacation: Winter vacation extended again in Delhi
Following the sharp drop in temperatures, the Directorate of Education clarified that all government and private schools from nursery to grade 8 will remain closed until January 15, 2026, due to the risk posed by dense fog and cold winds in the morning. There will be no physical activities for these classes.
Students in grades 9 to 12 will not receive any relief and will continue their classes offline due to their board exams and crucial syllabus. Schools have been instructed to make necessary arrangements to protect children from the cold and, if possible, adjust school timings.
New schedule for schools
Some schools have notified parents about the extension of the winter vacation. Schools that had planned exams have also rescheduled their schedules.
Holidays: Schools from Nursery to 8th are closed till January 15.
Resumption: Regular classes will resume from January 16, 2026.
Exams: Class 2 to 5 exams will be held between January 19 and January 21, 2026.
Safety protocols for children
The Meteorological Department has warned that fog and cold conditions may persist in Delhi for the next few days, making travel challenging for school buses and private vehicles. The Delhi government has asked schools to ensure that teaching continues online, if possible, during the winter holidays to avoid disrupting children’s education.
Advice for parents
Parents have been advised to keep their children safe at home and monitor WhatsApp messages or circulars from the school. If weather conditions do not improve, the administration may extend the holidays. Currently, schools are expected to reopen on January 16th, depending on weather conditions.
