According to an order issued by the Personnel Ministry, the Home Ministry’s proposal to appoint Rakesh Aggarwal as the Director General of the NIA has been approved. The order specifies the appointment of Rakesh Aggarwal, IPS, Special Director General of the NIA, as Director General. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has sanctioned his appointment as DG, NIA until August 31, 2028, the date of his retirement, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. (Image: X)

According to media reports, Rakesh Aggarwal will replace the current DG, Sadanand Date, who has been prematurely transferred back to Maharashtra by the government. Sadanand Date was appointed Special DG of the NIA on September 29, 2025, temporarily upgrading his existing Additional Director General (ADG) position for two years or until further orders. Sadanand Date is expected to assume the role of Maharashtra DGP as the current 1988 batch IPS officer Rashmi Shukla’s two-year tenure ends on December 31, 2025. (File Photo)
