The JEE (Main) paper conducted on January 22, 2026 saw math being the most difficult paper and Physics being the easiest. In the evening shift, chemistry was slightly easier, mathematics a bit more challenging, and physics moderately difficult. The paper was largely balanced in terms of question distribution and chapter coverage, students and experts said.
According to Ajay Sharma, National Academic Director of Engineering at Aakash Educational Services Limited, the Mathematics section ranged from moderate to difficult. The questions were well-distributed across the syllabus, with a higher focus on Calculus, Conic Sections, and Algebra. Topics like 3D and Vectors and Complex Numbers had fewer questions. Algebra was slightly more dominant, while Coordinate Geometry had moderate weightage. Chapters from both Classes 11 and 12 were adequately covered.
The Physics section was moderately difficult, with questions covering nearly all chapters, many focusing on experiments. The Chemistry section was easy to moderate, featuring questions from Organic, Inorganic, and Physical Chemistry. Inorganic Chemistry had relatively fewer questions, while Organic and Physical Chemistry were almost equally represented. Many questions were statement-based and directly inspired by NCERT.
First Shift Analysis
The JEE (Main) paper held on January 22, 2026 (morning shift) was considered moderately difficult by students and experts. Of the three sections, Physics was the easiest, followed by Chemistry, while Mathematics was more challenging.

Overall, the paper was balanced and comparable to last year’s papers in terms of both difficulty level and pattern. The distribution of questions across topics was largely uniform,” Sharma said.
The Mathematics section had a balanced distribution across the syllabus. Calculus, Conic Sections, and Algebra were more prominent, while 3D and Vectors and Complex Numbers appeared less frequently. Algebra was slightly more emphasized, with Coordinate Geometry having a moderate presence.
Most students found the Physics section easy. Nearly all major chapters were included, although Class 11 topics like Mechanics had fewer questions, and Rotation was not featured. Chapters such as Waves and Thermodynamics were present but had lesser weightage. In contrast, Class 12 chapters were more prominent, with numerous questions from Optics, Electromagnetism, and Modern Physics. A few questions also came from Waves and EMI.
The Chemistry section ranged from moderate to difficult. Questions covered all three areas—Organic, Inorganic, and Physical Chemistry. Inorganic Chemistry was more prevalent, with several questions from the p-block. Organic Chemistry focused on properties and name reactions, while Physical Chemistry included questions from Electrochemistry, Equilibrium, and Thermodynamics.
