The JEE (Main) 2026 session 1 paper held on January 23, 2026 (Evening Shift) was moderately challenging overall. Students reported that all three subjects – Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics – had similar levels of difficulty, with Mathematics being slightly tougher, while Physics and Chemistry were relatively easier to moderate. The paper was well-balanced in terms of question distribution and chapter coverage.
The Mathematics section ranged from moderate to difficult. Questions were well-spread across the syllabus, with a higher focus on Algebra, Calculus, and Conic Sections. Topics like Determinants, Matrices, 3D Geometry, Vectors, and Complex Numbers had average representation. Algebra was slightly dominant, while Coordinate Geometry had moderate weightage. The Probability section had fewer questions.
The Physics section was moderately difficult. Questions covered almost all major chapters, with more emphasis on Electrostatics and Magnetism, and fewer on Optics. The Chemistry section was easier compared to the other two subjects. Questions were drawn from all three branches—Organic, Inorganic, and Physical Chemistry, Ajay Sharma, National Academic Director, Engineering, Aakash Educational Services Limited stated.
Morning Shift Exam Analysis
The first session of the JEE Main 2026 exam is currently ongoing. According to student feedback, the JEE (Main) morning shift exam on January 23, 2026, was of easy to moderate difficulty. The difficulty levels of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics were quite similar, though Mathematics was a bit more ‘challenging’ than Physics and Chemistry.
“The JEE (Main) paper conducted on January 23, 2026 (Morning Shift) was of easy to moderate difficulty level. All three subjects—Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics—were nearly of equal difficulty, though Mathematics was slightly more challenging, while Physics and Chemistry were comparatively easier to moderate. The paper was largely balanced in terms of question distribution and chapter coverage,” Sharma added.
The Mathematics section varied from moderate to difficult, with questions well-distributed across the syllabus. There was significant emphasis on Integral Calculus, Conic Sections, and Algebra, particularly the Binomial Theorem. Topics like 3D Geometry, Vectors, and Complex Numbers had an average presence. Algebra stood out slightly, while Coordinate Geometry had a moderate weightage.
The Physics section presented a moderate challenge, encompassing nearly all major chapters. Magnetism was particularly prominent, while Optics had fewer questions. Mechanics had an average representation, and some questions were time-consuming, adding to the section’s difficulty. Electromagnetic Waves, Thermodynamics, and Modern Physics were also well-covered.
Students found the Chemistry section to range from easy to moderate. Questions were evenly spread across Organic, Inorganic, and Physical Chemistry, with Organic Chemistry being slightly more emphasized. Physical and Inorganic Chemistry had nearly equal representation. Many questions were statement-based, aligning closely with NCERT concepts. While not difficult, some required careful reading and conceptual clarity.
The JEE Main January session Paper 1 (BE/BTech) will continue until January 28, with Paper 2 (B.Arch/B.Planning) scheduled for January 29. This year, 14.10 lakh students have registered for the JEE Main January session 2026 exam, indicating tough competition and a high cut-off.
