Ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections, the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) will conduct written examinations for non-teaching staff in state-run and state-aided schools on March 1 and March 8, an official said on Thursday.

The move comes after the School Education Department received approval from the state secretariat ‘Nabanna’ to go ahead with the examinations. Following the clearance, official notices are being uploaded by the commission.

According to WBSSC, the Group-C examination will be held on March 1, while the Group-D examination is scheduled for March 8. There are 2,989 vacancies in Group-C and 5,488 vacancies in Group-D.

Around 16 lakh candidates have applied for the recruitment. Of these, about 8.13 lakh candidates have applied for Group-C posts and nearly 8.20 lakh candidates for Group-D posts. The examinations will be conducted across more than 1,500 centres across the state.

The Group-C written test will carry 60 marks, while the Group-D test will be of 40 marks.

However, the commission has clarified that “tainted” non-teaching staff, whose appointments were cancelled following a Supreme Court order on April 3, 2025, will not be allowed to appear for the exams. The WBSSC has already published a list of 3,512 tainted candidates, including 1,363 from Group-C and 2,349 from Group-D.
