Stars on vehicles in the Indian Army act as crucial identification marks. They distinguish military vehicles from civilian ones. The stars also indicate the rank of the officer inside, which aids in security, smooth movement, and the correct implementation of military protocol. (Image: News18 Telegu)

A clear distinction exists between a uniform star and a vehicle star. The star on a uniform signifies the officer’s rank and status, whether they are a lieutenant, major, or general. In contrast, the star on a vehicle indicates the presence of the officer using it. The star is attached to the vehicle only when the officer is inside, on duty, and in uniform. Once the officer is no longer in the vehicle, the star is removed. (Image: News18 Telegu)

In the military, only officers above the rank of colonel are permitted to affix stars to their vehicles. This rule is applicable to the official vehicles of officers ranging from the rank of brigadier to general. This enables security personnel, soldiers, or other officials to promptly identify the officer’s rank in the vehicle and enforce the appropriate protocol. (PTI Image)

The number of stars on the vehicle reflects the rank of the officer. The vehicles of the Chief of Army Staff, Admiral of the Navy, and Air Chief Marshal display four stars. Those of the Lieutenant General, Vice Admiral, and Air Marshal have three stars. Major General, Rear Admiral, and Air Vice Marshal vehicles feature two stars. Brigadier, Commodore, and Air Commodore vehicles carry one star each. Additionally, a small triangular or rectangular flag near these stars indicates the officer’s branch of service. (PTI Image)

Distinctive features of star-studded military vehicles are also evident on their number plates. Unlike those of civilian vehicles, military number plates feature an upward-pointing arrow, known as the ‘broad arrow’, signifying government property. Additionally, the year the vehicle was inducted into the army is displayed on the plate. The flags on these vehicles hold significant importance as well. General-level officers carry the army flag on their vehicles, while other commanders display the specific flags of their command or division. Together, the stars and flags protect the officer’s honour, ensure adherence to protocol, and maintain safety rules. Therefore, the stars and flags on military vehicles are not only identifiers but also crucial guides for upholding military protocol, safety regulations, and the officer’s honour. (File Photo)
