Larger 14-inch wheels offer advantages that smaller-wheel scooters do not inherently provide. The most noticeable benefit is added stability, which is also one of the reasons motorcycles feel more planted at speed. Scooters equipped with 14-inch wheels straddle a middle ground, combining everyday practicality with improved composure on uneven roads.
While bigger wheels are sometimes associated with a firmer ride, that depends largely on suspension tuning, tyre profile and other factors, and is not a fixed rule. With that in mind, here is a look at the most affordable scooters in India that come equipped with 14-inch wheels.
1. River Indie
Priced at Rs 1.46 lakh
Unlike many electric scooters that run on 12-inch wheels, the River Indie features 14-inch units at both ends. The larger diameter contributes largely to improved straight-line stability, better ability to deal with road imperfections and lends it an edge in handling compared to smaller-wheel alternatives.
The wheel size also aligns with the Indie’s utilitarian, boxy design. Given its tall stance and broad bodywork. At the same time, larger wheels can add rolling resistance and unsprung mass, factors that are likely to have some bearing on overall efficiency and range.
2. Aprilia SR 125 / SR 175
The SR range starts at Rs 1.08 lakh
When Aprilia debuted the SR range with the SR 150 in 2016, its 14-inch wheel setup was a rarity in the scooter segment. Both the SR 125 and SR 175 continue with the same formula, featuring similar styling and riding on 14-inch wheels aimed at improving handling. While the larger wheels do result in a firm ride, they deliver superior cornering stability and sharper handling compared to conventional smaller-wheel scooters.
3. Hero Xoom 160
The Xoom 160 is priced at Rs 1.38 lakh
The Xoom 160 marked the world’s largest manufacturer, Hero’s, foray into the 150cc+ maxi-scooter segment with a new liquid-cooled engine. Staying true to the maxi-scooter template, it features an imposing stance with a large beak and substantial bodywork. It also runs on 14-inch wheels to complement its proportions. However, despite the larger wheels, we found during our time with it that the Xoom 160 isn’t a particularly confident or natural handler when faced with a set of twisties.
2. Yamaha Aerox 155
The Aerox 155 is priced from Rs 1.40 lakh
Much like the Xoom 160, the Aerox is a true-blue maxi-scooter from Yamaha. Launched in 2022, it was aimed at carving a niche in the sporty scooter space and is powered by the same 155cc engine as the R15. It was received quite well as one of the first proper maxi-scooters in the segment, offering less practicality than conventional scooters but clawing back ground with superior handling and a reliable, peppy engine. That said, it is worth mentioning that the Aerox is a stiff scooter to ride although its ride has slightly improved over the years.
1. Hero Xoom 125
The Xoom 125 starts at Rs 80,494
The Xoom 125 was launched in late 2024 and is powered by a 124.6cc, air-cooled engine. It is currently the most affordable scooter in India to be equipped with 14-inch wheels. The larger wheels are aimed at delivering improved stability and handling compared to conventional 12-inch setups.
In terms of competition, it goes up against models such as the TVS Ntorq 125, which rides on 12-inch wheels and is one of the segment’s established benchmarks. The Xoom 125’s wheel size, therefore, sets it apart in what is otherwise a closely contested 125cc scooter space.
Honourable mentions
TVS Orbiter
The Orbiter is the Hosur-based brand’s newest EV offering, priced similarly as the base models of the iQube range, and it comes equipped with a 3.1kWh battery pack. It earns an honourable mention here because it runs a 14-inch wheel at the front and a 12-inch wheel at the rear, unlike the other scooters on this list, which feature 14-inch wheels at both ends. Despite the smaller rear wheel, the Orbiter feels stable, a trait largely attributed to the larger front wheel, which also gives it a distinct stance.
