Jamie Maclaren and Dimitrios Petratos scored as Mohun Bagan Super Giant secured a 2-0 victory over Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League on Monday.
Maclaren scored the opener in first-half stoppage time (45+4), while Petratos added the second in the 65th minute at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan.
The Mariners moved to second in the table with six points, level with city rivals East Bengal FC but behind on goal difference, while Chennaiyin FC are 11th.
Maclaren broke the deadlock just before halftime, giving the Mariners a narrow lead. Petratos then sealed the win with a goal in the second half. He was named player of the match.
Both head coaches, Sergio Lobera and Clifford Miranda, retained their starting XIs for the second consecutive match to maintain consistency.
Mohun Bagan settled in quickly, dominating possession, while Chennaiyin FC aimed to counter. The visitors had the first chance when Dinliana’s cross found Iñigo Martín, but the Spaniard couldn’t connect.
Chennaiyin defended in numbers, clearing attempts from Liston Colaco and Tekcham Abhishek Singh and blocking Anirudh Thapa’s left-footed shot from inside the box. Thapa had earlier come close with a volley that narrowly missed the target.
The Mariners increased their intensity, keeping Chennaiyin on the defensive. Petratos forced a sharp save from Chennaiyin goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz, who was later injured in a collision with Mohun Bagan’s Mehtab Singh. Samik Mitra replaced Nawaz.
Mohun Bagan’s pressure paid off in the final minute of first-half stoppage time. Anirudh Thapa dispossessed Irfan Yadwad and sent a defence-splitting pass to Maclaren, who timed his run perfectly to score.
The home side began the second half strongly, maintaining pressure on the visitors. Maclaren had two early chances, one blocked and another narrowly wide. He also connected with a cross from Subhasish Bose but couldn’t generate enough power.
Petratos doubled Mohun Bagan’s lead with a superb first-time finish. Liston Colaco initiated the move with a diagonal pass, and Bose delivered a cross from the left. Unmarked at the back post, Petratos volleyed home, with the goalkeeper unable to keep it out.
Both Petratos and Maclaren had opportunities to score again but lacked composure in front of goal. Substitute Jason Cummings, who replaced Maclaren, also tested the goalkeeper but was denied.
Chennaiyin, who failed to register a shot on target, had a late chance in stoppage time when Gurkirat Singh’s effort from the edge of the area went wide.
The two-goal margin was enough for Mohun Bagan to secure their second consecutive victory of the season.
