NCERT is developing new textbooks in line with the New Education Policy 2020.

The NCERT is ascertaining the process of making textbooks, which led to the error in judgement about inclusion of a chapter on “judicial corruption” after Supreme Court observed that there appeared to be a “well-orchestrated conspiracy” to defame the judiciary.

“The NCERT is ascertaining the process of making textbooks which has led to this error of judgement and also identify the persons responsible for the same. This would also ensure that this kind of inappropriateness is completely avoided in future. This shall be done with utmost strictness,” reported PTI citing sources.

This comes after a sharp remarks from the apex court, which termed it a “well-orchestrated conspiracy” to defame the judiciary. The court imposed a “complete blanket ban” on the Class 8 NCERT book and directed that all copies, both physical and digital, be seized.

The controversial chapter in Social Science textbook mentioned corruption, a large backlog of cases and an insufficient number of judges as challenged faced by judicial system.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Thursday also expressed deep concern over the inclusion of the chapter. He assured that accountability would be fixed and action taken against those involved in drafting the content.

After the court made it clear that it would not allow “anyone on earth” to tarnish the integrity of the judiciary, NCERT removed the textbook from its official website.

According to the sources, the government was extremely upset over the references included in the curriculum.

Earlier on Wednesday, NCERT issued an apology for what it called “inappropriate content”. It also stated that the textbook would be rewritten in consultation with the appropriate authorities.

“The error is purely unintentional and NCERT regrets the inclusion of inappropriate material in the said chapter. NCERT reiterates that the objective of the new textbooks is to strengthen constitutional literacy, institutional respect, and informed understanding of democratic participation amongst students,” it said.
