After nearly two decades in professional football, Sergio “Chiquito” Romero has decided to hang up his gloves.

The former Argentina and Manchester United goalkeeper is retiring at 39 and preparing to begin a new chapter as a coach.

According to journalist Fede Cristofanelli, Romero has already assembled his coaching staff and is ready to transition fully into management.

The veteran goalkeeper had recently been open to continuing his playing career. He was even willing to accept a backup role to Facundo Cambeses at Racing Club, but the opportunity ultimately did not materialise. Romero’s final appearance came with Argentinos Juniors in the Copa Argentina.

Still, his legacy, particularly with the Argentina national team, is secure.

Argentina’s Record Goalkeeper

Romero retires as the most-capped goalkeeper in Argentina’s history, finishing with 96 international appearances.

His defining moment came at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, where he produced a heroic performance in the semi-final against the Netherlands. Romero famously saved two penalties in the shootout — a night immortalised by Javier Mascherano’s message: “Today you become a hero.”

Argentina went on to reach their first World Cup final in 24 years.

His international success began much earlier. Romero was part of Argentina’s golden youth generation, winning the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada and claiming Olympic gold at the 2008 Beijing Games.

A European Journey

Romero’s club career took him across Europe after starting out at Racing Club.

He enjoyed a successful spell with AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands before moving to Sampdoria, Monaco, and later Manchester United.

At Old Trafford, Romero earned a reputation as one of the most reliable backup goalkeepers in Europe and played a key role in United’s 2017 UEFA Europa League triumph.

His final European stint came with Venezia before returning to Argentina.

The Next Chapter

Romero had already hinted that coaching was the natural next step.

“I’m ready to cross the line and start a career that will surely be beautiful,” he told dSports Radio earlier this year.
