West Ham United delivered a statement performance when it mattered most, thumping Wolves 4-0 to climb out of the relegation zone.

And the other outcome? Tottenham Hotspur are now dragged into deep trouble.

On a charged night at the London Stadium, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side sealed the gritty win to lift themselves two points clear of danger, while Spurs now find themselves in the bottom three: a position they haven’t occupied this late in a matchweek since 2015.

Mavropanos Leads the Charge

Konstantinos Mavropanos set the tone just before halftime, powering in a header from a corner to give West Ham a crucial lead. The defender later added a second to cap off a dominant display: a bitter twist for Tottenham fans, given his past ties to Arsenal. Serendipity.

Despite a cagey first half, West Ham found another gear after the restart. Valentin Castellanos struck twice in quick succession, exploiting defensive lapses and sealing the result by the 68th minute.

Castellanos’ first came after a slick one-two opened up Wolves’ backline, though goalkeeper Jose Sa will feel he should have done better. Just two minutes later, a deflected effort squirmed past him again, effectively ending the contest.

Mavropanos then completed the rout late on, hammering home a volley to send the home crowd into celebration.

Relegation Picture Tightens

The result couldn’t have come at a better time for West Ham, who were reeling from an FA Cup exit.

For Wolves, the situation looks bleak. Rooted to the bottom and 15 points from safety with just six games left, relegation feels inevitable.

Meanwhile, Tottenham’s crisis deepens. With seven games remaining, starting with a crucial clash against Sunderland under new boss Roberto De Zerbi, the fight to avoid a first drop since 1978 is officially on.

Before their current crisis, Spurs rarely faced relegation danger, with a notable previous instance in January 2009. The last time Tottenham were actually relegated from the top flight was in the 1976/77 season.
