CBSE 12th Passing Marks And Grading System

A student is considered to have passed the CBSE exam with a score of 33 per cent. If a student falls short of this requirement by about one mark, grace mark(s) may be granted. Those scoring below this even after grace can appear for a compartment exam or may need to repeat the academic year.

CBSE uses a 9-point grading scale (A1 to E) based on the marks secured by each student. A1 is the highest grade, and E is awarded to those who fail. The top 1/8th of all passed candidates are given Grade A1, and the next 1/8th receive Grade A2. The subsequent 1/8th groups of passed students are allotted Grades B1 and B2, followed in the same pattern by Grades C1, C2, D1, and D2. Students who do not clear the exam are assigned Grade E.
