Star France and Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe might not feature in the upcoming El Clásico against Barcelona in La Liga, which is scheduled for May 10, as he has suffered a thigh injury.

In an official statement, Real Madrid disclosed the nature of the injury Mbappe sustained during the 1-1 draw against Real Betis in La Liga on Friday.

As per the official statement, Mbappe has been diagnosed with a problem in the semitendinosus muscle of his left leg, with the injury confirmed after examinations held on Sunday, April 26.

The club hasn’t given a specific timeline for Mbappe’s recovery, noting that his condition is ‘pending evolution’. Further evaluations will be held in the coming days to assess the severity of the injury and outline the required rehab process.

This setback comes as a concern for Real Madrid at a crucial stage of the season, with Mbappe all set to be monitored before a return to full training is considered.

Madrid, who sit second in the Spanish top flight and trail leaders Barcelona by 11 points, will face Espanyol on Sunday, May 3, before a clash against the Catalan giants the following weekend.

Real Madrid indicated Mbappe had suffered a muscular overload, but further tests showed he was injured.

If Madrid drop points against Espanyol in Mbappe’s absence and Barcelona defeat Osasuna on Saturday, May 2, Hansi Flick’s team will be crowned champions for a second straight season.

Mbappe has struggled with injuries this season, raising concerns in France with the FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico all set to start on June 11.

Mbappe, a 2018 World Cup winner, was sidelined for two months because of a knee problem, the longest layoff of his career and admitted it left him feeling ‘frustration, anger and anxiety’.
