Premier League side Chelsea are reportedly closing on a blockbuster move to land former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso as the head coach of the London-based unit.
Reports suggest that the parties are close to completing a deal that would see the Spanish manager at the helm of the Blues.
The World Cup-winner, who led Leverkusen to an unprecedented title as a head coach during the 2023-24 season as he helped the side finish unbeaten in a massive triumph, before his move to Real Madrid, which promised to be a fabled homecoming for the club icon, but soon turned into a nightmare.
Chelsea care-taker Calum McFarlane has been incharge of the club following the sacking of Liam Rosenior, who lasted bare months after having taken over from Enzo Maresca.
The Spanish midfield maestro had a decorated playing career winning silverware across Europe with giants including Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, took to management like swan to water and helped underdogs Leverkusen to the German title in a massive upset to Bavarian giants Bayern.
Alonso’s time at Real Madrid, however, was marked by turmoil as his spell at the Spanish Capital City was cut short on the back of underwhelming results and clashes with the players in the unit.
Alonson, who came in to replace Carlo Ancelotti, was removed from the helm of the club in just over seven months, as Alvaro Arbeloa stepped in as the interim of the Spanish giants, who ultimately missed out on the La Liga, and UEFA Champions League titles marking two years on the bounce without silverware.
