In many countries, including the United States and Europe, passing an English language test is required for education, employment, and visas. Several language tests are available for this purpose, one of which is IELTS, which stands for International English Language Testing System. This testing system is jointly administered by the British Council, IDP IELTS, and Cambridge English.

Its purpose is to assess linguistic proficiency so that you do not face difficulties communicating in another country. There are two types of this test: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training.

IELTS Academic and General Training

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic is for students who wish to pursue higher studies in English-speaking countries. It assesses a student’s ability to understand university courses taught in English. IELTS General Training assesses a person’s fluency in English. It is intended for those who are moving to English-speaking countries to work or settle there.

The IELTS exam has four sections: listening to audio and answering questions, reading passages, writing an essay and letter/report, and a conversation with the examiner. The entire exam lasts 2 hours and 45 minutes. The first three modules are completed in a single day, while the fourth module is sometimes completed on a different day. Until now, there was an option to take the exam in pen-and-paper mode. However, now there are plans to conduct it entirely online. Let us understand the different modules in detail:

Listening Module – This module lasts 30 minutes, with an additional 10 minutes for transcribing answers. It involves listening to 4 recordings, each containing 10 questions.

Reading Module – This module is 60 minutes long and includes answering 40 questions.

Writing Module – This module is also 60 minutes long and consists of 2 writing tasks.

Speaking Module – This is an 11- to 14-minute session that tests your English speaking ability in 3 different parts. An examiner listens to your answers and then rates your English fluency.
