Kerala is likely to continue experiencing heavy monsoon rainfall over the next few days as the India Meteorological Department has issued Orange and Yellow Alerts for several districts across the state.
Heavy Rain Alert in Kerala: School and College Holidays May Be Announced in Selected Districts on July 9
The weather department has warned of heavy to very heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds, prompting district administrations to closely monitor the situation. Depending on local weather conditions, schools and colleges in some districts may be declared closed on Thursday, July 9, 2026.
Orange Alert Issued for Several Districts
For July 8, the IMD has placed the following districts under an Orange Alert:
- Ernakulam
- Idukki
- Thrissur
- Palakkad
- Malappuram
- Kozhikode
- Wayanad
- Kannur
- Kasaragod
An Orange Alert indicates the possibility of very heavy rainfall, with isolated areas likely to receive 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm of rainfall within 24 hours. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also expected in several locations.
Yellow Alert for Other Districts
A Yellow Alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Kottayam on July 8, while Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod remain under a Yellow Alert on July 9.
Under a Yellow Alert, isolated places may receive 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rainfall within 24 hours, along with thunderstorms and gusty winds.
Strong Winds and Continued Rainfall Expected
The IMD has also forecast strong winds of 40-50 kmph, with gusts reaching 50-60 kmph in isolated areas on July 8 and July 9. Light to moderate rainfall is expected across Kerala and Mahe through July 12, while heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in several districts during the ongoing monsoon spell.
Residents have been advised to remain alert, especially in low-lying, hilly, and landslide-prone areas, as changing weather conditions could lead to flooding, waterlogging, and travel disruptions.
School Holidays to Be Decided by District Administrations
As of now, no statewide school or college holiday has been announced. However, district collectors may declare holidays in districts experiencing severe weather based on local conditions and safety assessments.
Students, parents, and educational institutions are advised to rely only on official notifications issued by district administrations and school authorities regarding holidays, revised class timings, or online learning arrangements.
Since weather conditions remain dynamic, the IMD may revise its forecasts depending on the movement of the weather systems. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with student safety remaining the highest priority.
