Ingredients

  • Onions – I like to use red onions for this salad. Since we are soaking them in lemon iced water, it mellows the pungent taste. But you can use white onions which are more milder.
  • Spice Powders – Kashmiri chilli powder, cumin powder, chat masala powder are the spice powders which I used.
  • Seasonings – regular salt and black salt adds the punch taste. I add a pinch of sugar for balance.
  • Lemon Juice – you need some kind of acidic ingredients like lemon juice or vinegar.
  • Mustard Oil – one of the main flavouring in this onion salad is mustard oil. It totally elevates the dish.
  • Coriander leaves – freshly chopped coriander leaves adds refreshing taste.

Step by Step Pictures

1)Take onions, peel off the skin and wash them well. Now use a knife or mandolin slicer to slice onions thinly.

2)Place the sliced onions in a bowl. Cover with water and add few ice cubes into it. Add in 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and let the onions sit for 15 minutes. This step makes the onions mellow and removes the pungent onion taste.

3)Now strain the onion through a sieve and let the extra water strain off for 5 minutes.

4)Take the onion slices in a bowl. Add in black salt and regular salt (if needed)

5)Add in spice powders. I am using Kashmiri chilli powder, cumin powder and chat masala.

5)Add a pinch of sugar. Sugar balance the overall taste, you can skip it as well.

6)Now add in fresh lemon juice. vinegar is a great alternative.

7)Now add in mustard oil. This is the main flavouring to the salad. If you don’t have mustard oil or don’t like the flavour, you can use olive oil.

8)Add in lots of fresh coriander leaves.

9)toss gently to combine using your hands.

10)Serve with roti.
