Defending champions Argentina are all set to take on 2010 winners Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, with the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, better known as the MetLife Stadium, to host.
With a host of world leaders and celebrities expected to attend the highly anticipated final, heavy traffic congestion is anticipated across the New Jersey region, affecting not only spectators travelling to the venue but also residents.
Security arrangements at the venue are being treated as a top priority as well, with reports suggesting that US President Donald Trump is expected to attend the final and present the FIFA World Cup trophy to the champions.
The event is set to draw even greater global attention with multiple high-profile artists, including BTS, Madonna, Justin Bieber and Shakira, scheduled to perform during the halftime show, according to reports.
As a result, New Jersey is expected to witness severe traffic congestion throughout the day. Here is everything you need to know about road closures, traffic advisories and essential travel tips to help you avoid delays and reach your destination.
Private vehicles will not be permitted to access the FIFA World Cup final venue, making public transport the only option for most spectators. There will be no general parking, tailgating or pedestrian access from surrounding public roads.
Round-trip train tickets start at $98 (more than Rs 9,000) and are non-refundable, non-transferable and will not be available for purchase on matchday. Fans must book their tickets in advance.
Another travel option is the New York/New Jersey Stadium Shuttle, with fares beginning at $20 (around Rs 2000) for fans parking their vehicles at designated park-and-ride locations.
But as there is no parking at the stadium precinct, the shuttle will only drop passengers at a designated point near the venue, from where they must continue on foot via the approved access routes.
Residents living near Route 3, Route 120 and the New Jersey Turnpike’s Eastern Spur have been advised to expect intermittent road closures through Sunday evening, as per CentralJersey.com.
Natalie Hamilton, spokesperson for the New York/New Jersey Host Committee, outlined the travel and security arrangements ahead of the final, which is expected to be attended by several heads of state.
Hamilton said, “With multiple heads of state expected to attend, security measures will be significantly enhanced and road closures should be expected. The FIFA World Cup Final is designated as a SEAR 1 event and our preparedness efforts reflect the level of planning, coordination and operational readiness that an event of this scale requires.”
