Bindyarani Devi wins bronze in the women’s 58kg weightlifting final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, lifting a total of 199kg.

Bindyarani Devi secured a bronze medal in the women’s 58kg weightlifting final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Monday after producing a brilliant performance in Glasgow.
The 27-year-old began the snatch round with a successful 83kg lift before clearing 85kg in her second attempt. She then lifted 87kg in her final attempt to finish joint-third in the snatch standings, putting herself in contention for a medal.
The clean and jerk round brought a bit more drama. Bindyarani initially had her 110kg lift cancelled after it was deemed to have broken the rules, leaving her medal hopes hanging in the balance. However, she responded brilliantly by successfully lifting 112kg in her second attempt.
That lift proved just enough to secure her at least a bronze medal after England’s Eliza Pratt failed to lift 113kg in her final attempt. Bindyarani finished with a total of 199kg to claim India’s sixth medal of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Bindyarani adds to her Commonwealth legacy
As a child, Bindyarani was inspired by stories of ancient Manipuri heroes. She later found another source of motivation in fellow Manipuri weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, whom she hoped to emulate. Her journey in the sport began at the junior level, with appearances at the Asian Youth and Junior Championships in 2016, before she established herself on the senior international circuit.
Bindyarani has enjoyed considerable success at the Commonwealth level. She won gold at the 2019 Commonwealth Senior Championships in the 55kg category with a total lift of 183kg. She followed that with silver medals at the 2021 Commonwealth Senior Championships and the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where she lifted 202kg.
After the recent shift in weight categories, Bindyarani moved to the 58kg division and continued her strong run, winning silver at the 2025 Commonwealth Championships with a total of 206kg. Her consistency and experience have made her one of India’s key medal contenders in weightlifting.
