Gulveer Singh scripted history on Saturday, August 1, by becoming the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the men’s 5000m, claiming bronze in the event.
Gulveer also became the first Indian track and field athlete to win two medals in a single edition of the Games.
Reigning Asian champion Gulveer completed a historic double on the final day of the athletics competition, adding a bronze medal in the men’s 5000m to his silver in the 10,000m.
Gulveer clocked 13 minutes 24.95 seconds to finish third and cap a memorable CWG campaign.
Kenya’s Mathew Kipchumba Kipsang clinched the gold medal in the men’s 5000m with a winning time of 13:23.61. Australia’s Ky Robinson, who had earlier bagged gold in the 10,000m, finished second to take silver in 13:24.70.
But Gulveer, who holds the national records in both the 5000m and 10,000m events, was unable to match his best form. His bronze-medal-winning effort was well below his season-best time of 13:03.93 and also fell short of his national record mark of 12:59.77.
Gulveer, who won bronze in the men’s 10,000m at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games as well, stayed among the front runners throughout the race before making his decisive move in the final lap.
Gulveer defeated Kenya’s Cornelius Kemboi for the bronze by a mere 0.04 seconds.
Kemboi is a sub-13 runner, having clocked 12:56.02 in June, but on Saturday, Gulveer defeated him, though by a whisker.
