Liverpool will host Monaco at Anfield on Sunday, marking Andoni Iraola’s first match in charge of the Reds on Merseyside since replacing Arne Slot as head coach.
This will be Liverpool’s fourth pre-season fixture and the first of two home friendlies before the Premier League season begins. The Reds have had a mixed summer so far, beating Sunderland and Wrexham before a 4-2 defeat to Leeds United in Chicago, where a two-goal lead was surrendered after the interval.
Liverpool have been able to test out some youngsters, but concerns remain about a lot of their ‘depth’ players. The defense has looked shaky more often than not, and set-pieces continue to remain a nagging issue for Iraola, which would need fixing. New loanee Ronald Araujo is unlikely to be in the squad for the match, but it remains to be seen if he’s introduced to the crowd at some time.
Monaco head into the game under new coach Filipe Luis, who took charge in June. Les Monegasques have alternated results through the summer, winning 5-2 against AS Saint-Priest, drawing with Cercle Brugge and losing to Sporting CP, before a 1-0 win over Getafe in their most recent outing at the Stade Louis II.
The club is also navigating uncertainty over forward Folarin Balogun’s future after the departure of Maghnes Akliouche to PSG. Liverpool and Monaco have met only twice before in a competitive fixture, in the group stage of the 2004-05 Champions League, with both winning one game each.
