The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat recently signed a 20-year $3.1-billion concession agreement with Bergmans Security Consultant and Supplies in Abuja to digitise customs operations across Africa.

The technology to be deployed under the pact is already successful in Nigeria.
The agreement, executed between AfCFTA Holdings Ltd., the AfCFTA secretariat and AfriTrade CMP Ltd., a subsidiary of Bergmans Security Consultant and Supplies Limited, covers the AfCFTA Customs Modernisation Project, which will see the deployment of digital technology to customs administrations across Africa.
Just weeks before, both parties had signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on transforming customs operations across Africa.
Bergmans’ role would be to provide financing and technical expertise working with stakeholders around the world, it chairman Alhaji Saleh Ahmadu said at the signing ceremony.
The technology to be deployed under the agreement is already successful in Nigeria, where it has increased revenue, removed bottlenecks in trade transactions and reduced clearance times, he added.
