Sydney Marathon’s 2026 finisher medal shows Munich’s Allianz Arena instead of Sydney’s, sparking online amusement. Organizers admit the “unfortunate error.

Sydney Marathon organisers have found themselves at the centre of an international stadium mix-up after this year’s finishers’ medal was unveiled with Munich’s Allianz Arena instead of Sydney’s Allianz Stadium.
The two-sided medal features a Sydney skyline with landmarks from the marathon route, including the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. But alongside them sits the unmistakable shape of Munich’s Allianz Arena, complete with its distinctive diamond-patterned exterior.
Organisers acknowledged the mistake, describing the stadium mix-up as an “unfortunate error”.
“A little too much international flavour has found its way onto the back of the finishers medal, with an incorrect depiction of the stadium,” a Sydney Marathon spokesperson said. “We’re not going to run from it, it was an unfortunate error, though it’s certainly given everyone something to talk about this weekend, mostly in good humour.”
Social media users were quick to spot the unusual addition.
“Oh, dear. Oh, this is bad,” said Instagram account @morningcoffeerun, suggesting the stadiums may have been confused after an online search for Allianz.
The Munich venue itself joined in on the joke.
“Oh wow, we didn’t have that on our bingo card!” the Allianz Arena posted on Instagram.
“Perhaps they tried to find something else they had in common: Allianz Arena — Sydney Opera — Unique Architecture — Both are worth a visit!”
Australian media also seized on the blunder, with the Sydney Morning Herald running the headline: “The medal that will put Sydney on the map. The wrong map.”
The medal’s other side features a blue-and-gold design by Indigenous artist Ambrose Killian, whose work has been widely praised. Killian told AFP he was not involved in creating the Sydney skyline side of the medal.
More than 40,000 participants are expected to take part in the 2026 Sydney Marathon, with each finisher set to receive the medal as a “badge of honour” for completing the 42.2-kilometre (26.2-mile) course.
“With the event a week away, this is the medal our finishers will receive,” the Sydney Marathon spokesperson said.
“Behind every one of these medals is months of early mornings, long runs and quiet determination, and having it placed around your neck at the Sydney Opera House is a moment our participants will never forget,” the spokesperson added.
“It’s a beautiful medal, and now a little more unique.”
