Background
Awarapan 2 arrived in theatres alongside Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947. The Emraan Hashmi-led sequel, however, has emerged as the stronger performer at the box office.
The film’s performance has been supported by the popularity of the Awarapan franchise and the renewed versions of songs from the original. The 2007 film, which starred Emraan Hashmi in the lead, did not make a major impact commercially during its theatrical release but gained a dedicated following over the years.
Its music, in particular, remained popular long after the film’s release. Songs from the original Awarapan became an important part of its legacy, helping the franchise retain familiarity among audiences.
Now, almost two decades after the first film, that nostalgia appears to be translating into theatrical interest for Awarapan 2. With Rs 180.91 crore in worldwide gross earnings after nine days, the sequel has given the franchise a much stronger box office run than its predecessor.
