Devdutt Padikkal continued his stunning run of form as the India batter slammed another century during Day 1 of the second Test match against Sri Lanka on Sunday. Padikkal looked in sensational form as he scored 117 runs off 193 deliveries with the help of 12 fours. The left-handed batter now has the most runs by a visiting No. 3 in Sri Lanka during a two-match Test series. The record belonged to former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming with 307 runs. However, Padikkal currently has 328 runs in the ongoing series thanks to two hundreds. He also became the first player ever from a visiting team to score multiple centuries in Sri Lanka while batting at No. 3 during a two-match Test series.
Padikkal also shattered Rahul Dravid‘s 27-year-old record by scoring the most runs by an Indian batter in a two-match away Test series. Dravid scored 321 runs during India’s India tour of New Zealand 1998-99.
Overall, he became the seventh Indian batter after Vinod Kambli, Mohammad Azharuddin, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara to score multiple centuries in a series away from home against Sri Lanka.
Devdutt Padikkal struck his second consecutive Test century as India reached 300 for 5 at stumps.
Captain Shubman Gill made 50, while opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with 45 and 43 respectively.
Dhruv Jurel (7 batting) and Saransh Jain (4 batting) were at the crease at the end of the day’s play.
Padikkal’s 117 came from 193 balls and he hit 12 fours in all. He stitched 120 runs for the third wicket with Gill who fell at the stroke of tea when India reached 187/3. Gill was caught behind for 50 off 108 balls (6 fours) right after completing his half-century. He was dismissed by Asitha Fernando.
