India’s 1-0 series win over Sri Lanka was mixed with disappointment after Sonal Dinusha led a resilient lower-order fightback to force a draw on Day 5 of the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) in Colombo on Thursday.  

Where India Stand In The WTC Points Table

The draw in Colombo leaves India in 5th position on the WTC 2025–27 leaderboard. Having earned only 4 points for the draw rather than 12 for an outright win, India’s points percentage (PCT) dipped from 53.33% to 51.52%.

Remaining Fixtures For India (7 Tests)

India have played 11 of their 18 scheduled matches in this cycle. India now have seven Tests left:

vs New Zealand (Away): 2 Tests (November 2026)  

vs Australia (Home): 5 Tests (Border-Gavaskar Trophy, early 2027)  

Qualification Scenarios: How India Can Reach The Final

With a maximum of 84 points still available from their remaining seven games, here is how India’s qualification maths shapes up:

1. The Flawless Finish: 7 Wins from 7 Tests (70.37% PCT)

Requirement: Clean sweep in New Zealand (2–0) and Australia (5–0) at home.  

Impact: Guarantees a top-two finish. India would finish above the 70% mark, rendering results of other contenders irrelevant.

2. The Target Threshold: 6 Wins from 7 Tests (64.81% – 66.67% PCT)

Requirement: 2-0 in New Zealand + 4-1 against Australia, or 1–0 in NZ + 5–0 vs AUS.  

Impact: Historically, finishing above 64% provides near-certain qualification for the WTC Final. India will comfortably stay ahead of trailing contenders and directly challenge the top two.  

3. The Danger Zone: 5 Wins from 7 Tests (59.25% PCT)

Requirement: Winning five matches with two losses or draws (e.g., 1-1 in NZ and 4-1 vs AUS).  

Impact: Qualification slips out of India’s hands. India would need South Africa, New Zealand, or Australia to drop multiple matches in their respective overseas tours to squeeze through on net percentages.

 4. 4 Wins or Fewer (< 55% PCT)

Impact: Virtually eliminates India from contention, given the strong PCT positions currently held by Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand.

The draw in Colombo has turned India’s upcoming away series in New Zealand into a must-win contest.

To avoid relying on complex external permutations, India must aim for at least six wins out of their last seven Tests to book a place at Lord’s for the 2027 WTC Final.
